Typhoon-enhanced southwesterly wind flow bringing rains, gusts — PAGASA

The southwesterly wind flow, enhanced by Typhoon “Aghon” (international name: Ewiniar) may continue to bring rainy and gusty conditions over parts of the country in the next three days, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, May 29.

In the 11 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said moderate to heavy rains may prevail over Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Zambales, and Bataan this Wednesday.

On Thursday, May 30, moderate to heavy rains may persist in northern Palawan, Lubang Islands, Bataan, Zambales, and Pangasinan.

PAGASA warned of flooding and rain-induced landslides, particularly in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards, as identified in hazard maps, and in areas that have received significant rainfall over the last few days.

Gusty conditions due to the southwesterly wind flow may also affect Batanes, Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, northern Aurora, southern mainland Quezon, Polillo Islands, Palawan, Lubang Islands, Romblon, Marinduque, and Camarines Norte this Wednesday.

Batanes, Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Lubang Islands, and Kalayaan Islands may continue to experience gusty conditions on Thursday.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

Flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms may also occur, PAGASA warned.

‘Aghon’ about to leave PAR

As of 11 a.m., Typhoon Aghon was located 1,060 kilometers east-northeast of the extreme Northern Luzon andmaintained its maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 160 kph.

PAGASA said the typhoon is moving in a northeastward direction at a speed of 35 kph and is “about to leave” the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

Aghon is expected to be outside the PAR on Wednesday afternoon.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said there are no new tropical cyclones expected to form or affect the country until the end of the month.

Badrina noted that the prevalence of the southwesterly wind flow signals the imminent onset of the rainy season in the country.
