The Luzon grid was placed under red and yellow alerts for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, May 29, by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
During the day, the Luzon grid experienced a red alert status from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with yellow alerts in place from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. (May 30).
Amid the ongoing yellow and red alerts on the Luzon grid, the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said it coordinated again with its large-load customers to secure their cooperation in reducing their power consumption to help alleviate the demand pressure.
"We again ask for the public's support in helping manage the situation by continue practicing energy conservation and efficiency measures," Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco spokesperson said.
On the same day, the Visayas grid will also be under a yellow alert.
A red alert is declared when there is an insufficient power supply to meet consumer demand and the regulating requirements of the transmission grid.
In contrast, a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is not adequate to meet the contingency requirement of the transmission grid.
NGCP also warned of potential power service interruptions in various parts of Luzon on Wednesday afternoon.
NGCP said it may implement manual load dropping (MLD) in areas from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on May 29, 2024, including sections of Pangasinan, Tarlac, La Union, Pampanga, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Batangas, and parts of Batangas.
However, NGCP said the schedule for these interruptions may be canceled if the system conditions improve, such as in cases where the actual demand falls below projections.
