Red, yellow alerts declared for Luzon grid Monday

The Luzon Grid will be under red alert for a six-hour period on Monday afternoon, followed by a yellow alert for another four hours during the day.

According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the red alert status will be in effect from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, May 27.

This indicates that the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating needs.

Additionally, the grid will be under a yellow alert from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the same day and later from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. (May 28).

This signals that the operating margin is inadequate to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirements.

Factors leading to these alerts include the forced outages of several power plants such as Ilijan, Pagbilao 1, 2, and 3, and SBPL due to the impact of tropical storm Aghon.

Additionally, issues like boiler feed water trouble at Masinloc 3, broken spring support at QPPL's turbine combine reheat value, and the deration of Sual 1, Calaca 2, and Masinloc 1 have further strained the grid's capacity.

The NGCP’s available capacity stands at 12,326 megawatts, while the peak demand is at 11,455 megawatts, leaving 4,497.3 megawatts unavailable to the grid.
