A 12-year-old Grade 6 pupil drowned on the Chico River in Barangay Tocucan, Bontoc, Mountain Province, on Friday, May 24.
Police Major Ryan Wakat, Bontoc chief of police, identified the victim as Veneizah R. Atiwag.
Atiwag and her classmates were playing on the river bank near their school when she slipped and drowned.
Her companions sought assistance from elders in the area who reported the incident to the police.
Rescuers recovered the victim’s body at noon on Saturday, May 25, near the area where she drowned.
Police advised the people here to warn children against going to the river due to strong current, particularly now the wet season is fast approaching.
