'Aghon' now a severe tropical storm --- PAGASA

Signal No. 3 was raised over the eastern section of Quezon

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, May 26, that "Aghon" has intensified into a Severe Tropical Storm (STS) while moving over the coastal waters of Mauban, Quezon.

In a 5 p.m. weather update, PAGASA located STS Aghon, internationally known as "Ewiniar," over the coastal waters of Mauban, Quezon, moving northeastward "slowly."

At 4 p.m., "Aghon" had maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 130 kph.

PAGASA said an STS is a tropical cyclone with maximum wind speeds of 87 to 117 kph, or 48 to 63 knots.

 

Wind signals

 

The state weather bureau hoisted Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 (storm-force winds) over the eastern section of Quezon, including the Polillo Islands.

Meanwhile, areas such as Aurora, the northern and central portions of Quezon, Laguna, the eastern portion of Batangas, the eastern and central portions of Rizal, and the northern portion of Camarines Norte are under Signal No. 2 (gale-force winds).

Furthermore, PAGASA raised TCWS No. 1 (strong winds) in the eastern portion of Isabela, the eastern portion of Quirino, the southern portion of Nueva Vizcaya, the eastern and southern portions of Nueva Ecija, the southern portion of Bataan, the eastern portion of Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, the rest of Quezon, the rest of Rizal, the rest of Batangas, the northern and central portions of Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, the extreme northern portion of Romblon, the rest of Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur.

In its bulletin, PAGASA forecasted that "Aghon" is expected to arrive 80 km east-northeast of Infanta, Quezon at 11 p.m.

At 1 p.m., the state weather bureau located the tropical storm in the vicinity of Mauban, Quezon, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph.
