Thousands stranded as tropical depression 'Aghon' forces cancellation of sea trips

More than 3,000 passengers were stranded in various seaports in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao due to the effects of tropical depression “Aghon”, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Saturday, May 25.

The PCG said the temporary stoppage of maritime voyages due to bad weather affected 896 passengers in 14 ports in Bicol (Region 5); 671 passengers in 10 ports in Central Visayas (Region 7); 1,174 passengers in 12 ports in Eastern Visayas (Region 8); and 396 passengers in 10 ports in Northeastern Mindanao.

A separate situation report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) monitored a lower number of 2,100 passengers but it did not include those stranded in Mindanao, only in Regions 5 and 8.

Further, there were also 50 vessels, five motorboats, and 66 rolling cargoes that were also stranded in the affected regions while 171 vessels and 11 motorboats were taking shelter due to Aghon.

  1. Power interruption was also recorded in MacArthur and Tabontabon towns in the province of Leyte in Eastern Samar but the NDRRMC said power supply has since returned.

Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, PCG Commandant, directed coast guard districts in the affected regions to ensure that there would be zero maritime casualty amid the bad weather.

Deployable response groups (DRGs) and rescue assets by the PCG were put on stand by and ready to be activated if needed during search and rescue operations to assist the capabilities of local government units.

“Admiral Gavan also instructed PCG units to coordinate with other rescue agencies and observe the fastest response time in responding to maritime incidents,” PCG spokesperson Rear Adm. Armando Balilo said.

Meanwhile, the PCG urged passengers to cooperate with the authorities and extend extra patience with the cancellation of trips to avoid maritime accidents. The agency also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into sea and conducting fishing activities amid the bad weather.

As of 11 a.m., Aghon maintained its strength and was last spotted over the coastal waters of San Vicente, Northern Samar, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

It was moving northwestward at 30 kilometers per hour (kph) while packing a maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 85 kph.
