The Philippines has expressed hopes in building stronger bonds with African nations as Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo highlighted the opportunities that the region could offer.
Joining the African people in celebrating African Day, Manalo said Saturday, May 25, that the Philippines and African nations share common values and aspirations, including a firm belief in democracy, human rights, and sustainable development, despite their geographical distance.
That is why he said his department renewed its focus on building stronger ties with individual African nations, considering the vastness of the opportunities that Africa represents.
"Under my directive, cooperation on various fields with bilateral partners has been enhanced," Manalo said.
"Starting last year, we have also intensified our presence in the African continent and making our voice heard in various fora involving African partners," he added.
Manalo disclosed that the year 2024 will witness an exchange of visits by senior officials from both sides, "with the aim of delivering concrete results on various areas of cooperation."
"Africa Day serves as an opportunity for the Philippines to reaffirm its commitment to solidarity, cooperation, and partnership with African nations," Manalo said as he joined the African peoples and nations in joining the African Day.
"This day marks the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, the precursor to the African Union. It is a pivotal moment in Africa's history that symbolizes unity, solidarity, and the collective aspirations of African nations for independence and self-determination," he added.
Manalo said he is hoping "to build ever stronger bonds with our African partners," with the help of six resident African embassies in the Philippines and seven Philippine Foreign Service Posts covering Africa.
