BAGUIO CITY – The City Health Services Office reported that dengue cases here went up by 15 percent and may continue to increase as a result of the transition from El Niño the La Niña phenomenon.

Dr. Donnabel Panes, CHSO medical officer, said dengue cases increased by 44 from 284 from January to May last year to 328 in the first five months of this year.
"We are expecting an increase in dengue cases starting now because of the rainy season, that's why the General Services Office is currently working double time in this city's ‘Denguerra’ (war against dengue) kasi mas maraming basura, mas maraming possible breeding sites (the more garbage, the more breeding sites)," she said.
Denguerra was launched in 2022 in which the community is encouraged to join the cleanup of possible mosquito breeding sites every Thursday.
Panes said Denguerra shows this city's serious resolve to combat this health threat and encouraged all residents to join a united and concerted effort against the deadly mosquito-borne disease.
She said two days of fever followed by rashes are the most common symptoms of dengue and patients should seek consultation in the nearest medical facility for proper diagnosis.
Panes reiterated the importance of container management by cleaning and covering all possible breeding sites for mosquitoes, like drums, tires, flower pots, and empty containers, including plants that catch and store rainwater in their leaves.
