The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) commemorated the 40th death anniversary of its former chief, Maj. Gen Tomas B. Karingal, on Friday, May 24.

The commemoration started with a Mass held at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel at around 7 a.m., followed by the laying of wreaths in front of the late general’s monument in the QCPD headquarters.
The first wreath was offered by the commanders of the 16 stations of the police district, while the second wreath was from retired Brig. Gen. Elmo San Diego and former personnel of the late general.
The third wreath was offered by QCPD members led by Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, together with Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte; while the last wreath was from the family of Karingal.

Maranan urged the members of QCPD to keep the memory of Karingal as their inspiration.
“His legacy of service continues to inspire and empower us to create positive change in our communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Belmonte said that the members of QCPD must pledge their loyalty to service and to the country just like Gen. Karingal.
"Ang inyong serbisyo ay isa sa pinaka-kailangan ng bayan. Gamitin ninyo ang inyong kakayahan at talino upang mapaunlad ang ating komunidad at bansa. At tulad ni Gen. Karingal, ipanata ninyo ang inyong katapatan sa serbisyo at sa bayan (Your service is one of the most needed in the country. Use your skills and intelligence for the development of our community and nation. And like Gen. Karingal, pledge your loyalty to service and to the nation),” she said.
The QCPD said Gen. Karingal began his career as a constabulary officer in Ilocos and Nueva Ecija after graduating from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

He served as an undercover and intelligence officer, combating rebels in Bataan, Corregidor, and Manila.
Before retiring on May 19, 1964, he was a provincial commander in Iloilo and Batangas.
However, he was immediately recalled to duty on May 20, 1964 as the commanding officer of the Law Enforcement Command of the Bureau of Customs Police.
He served as the QCPD chief from July 5, 1967 to December 19, 1975, by virtue of a presidential appointment under the late former President Ferdinand Marcos.
He was assassinated on May 24, 1984 on Scout Borromeo Street in Quezon City.
Representative Patrick Michael Vargas, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) UnderSecretary Procopio Lipana, former personnel of Gen. Karingal -- retired Col. Nestor Abalos, retired Maj. Josefina Caspellan; and station commanders and other guests graced the event.
The ceremony concluded with a simple breakfast attended by the family and relatives of the late Karingal.
