Megaworld’s office and mall developments in the Philippines, spanning 52 fully operational properties, have achieved carbon neutrality, or the balance between a company’s carbon emissions and offsets.
According to the developer, the said achievement is its biggest sustainability milestone to date.
Data from Megaworld and Diligent, the leading governance, risk, and compliance software provider, showed that the real estate giant’s carbon emissions in 2023 accounted for some 69,000 metric tons. 98 percent of these came from electricity consumption, while the rest was from fuel.
The company said during the previous year, it offset around 36,000 metric tons of emissions by tapping renewable energy as a power source. It also aims to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

“We look forward to achieving carbon neutral emissions for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2035 for the entire Megaworld Group. We also turn our focus on accounting for our full Scope 3 emissions through our collaboration with our ESG Data Warehouse partner, Diligent, for a more ambitious target of achieving Net Zero by 2050,” said Megaworld Sustainability Head Jose Arnulfo Batac.
Apart from offset efforts, the real estate developer said it has already planted some 100,000 trees within its dedicated carbon forests across the country since 2021.

“In the next few years, we will be able to activate over 1,000 hectares of carbon forests in Batangas, Cavite, Tarlac, Iloilo, Palawan, and Cebu,” he added.
In 2023, Megaworld launched its eco-initiative “MEGreen” to consolidate the company’s sustainability projects for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
