Over 40 areas may experience ‘dangerous’ heat index on May 22


The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said 44 areas may still experience a heat index that is considered “dangerous” on Wednesday, May 22.

PAGASA warns that a dangerous heat index ranges from 42 degrees Celsius (°C) to 51°C, which means a person is more likely to experience heat-related issues like cramps and exhaustion and a higher chance of heat stroke with continued activity.

The heat index in Virac, Catanduanes; Roxas City, Capiz; and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte may reach 46°C.

Meanwhile, it may reach 45°C in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Aparri, Cagayan; Sangley Point, Cavite; Ambulong, Tanauan, Batangas; and Iloilo City, Iloilo.

Bacnotan, La Union; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; ISU, Echague, Isabela; Iba, Zambales; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; Aborlan, Palawan; Cuyo, Palawan; Dumangas, Iloilo; Catarman, Northern Samar; Guiuan, Eastern Samar; Maasin, Southern Leyte; and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur may experience a 44°C heat index.

PAGASA added that NAIA, Pasay City; Science Garden, Quezon City; MMSU, Batac, Ilocos Norte; CLSU, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija; Cubi Pt., Subic Bay, Olongapo City; Coron, Palawan; Daet, Camarines Norte; Masbate City, Masbate; La Granja, La Carlota, Negros Occidental; Siquijor, Siquijor; Catbalogan, Samar; and Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte may have a heat index of 43°C.

Meanwhile, a 42°C heat index may be recorded in Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Calayan, Cagayan; Casiguran, Aurora; Alabat, Quezon; Mulanay, Quezon; Legazpi City, Albay; Mambusao, Capiz; Tacloban City, Leyte; VSU-Baybay, Leyte; and Borongan, Eastern Samar.

On April 28, Iba, Zambales recorded the highest heat index this year at 53°C.
