Makati Med sees a slight uptick in Covid-19 cases
While the situation remains 'manageable,' the public was urged to observe basic infection control practices
The Makati Medical Center saw an increase in Covid-19 cases as reflected in both its Covid occupancy and incidence of cases among healthcare workers.

“There has been a slight increase in Covid-19 cases - reflected in both our Covid occupancy in the 8th Wing and incidence of Covid-19 cases among our healthcare workers,” said Makati Medical Center Medical Director Saturnino Javier in a statement issued May 20.
“After having zero occupancy for many days in the 8th floor Covid Wing, we have to increase our capacity to a dozen beds since a few days ago,” Javier added.
Makati Med’s daily Covid-19 occupancy, Javier explained, varies from 50 to 70 percent “mostly patients with co-morbidities or patients with other illnesses who have tested positive for Covid-19.”
Meanwhile, Javier noted that there are “no healthcare workers” admitted for Covid-19. “About 20 HCWs with Covid019 are on home isolation at the moment,” he said.
Manageable
Despite the recorded increase in Covid-19 cases, Makati Med assured that the Covid-19 situation is “very manageable.”
“While we maintain that there is no reason for alarm, we emphasize basic infection control practices such as masking, handwashing, cough, and etiquette among others,” Javier said.
Moreover, he noted that Makati Med remains “aware” of emerging developments related to Covid-19.
In particular, Javier said that they continue to monitor the FLIRT variant (JN. 1 sublineage) in other countries like the US, India, and Singapore.
DOH monitoring
In a statement issued on May 21, the Department of Health (DOH) said it continues to track Covid-19 case counts and newly designated variants under monitoring, in parallel with international developments.
DOH data showed from May 7 to 13, there were 877 new Covid-19 cases reported, with an average of 125 cases reported per day.
Out of the new cases reported, seven had severe or critical disease. Five deaths were recorded, occurring in the recent 2 weeks from April 30 to May 13.
“While there is an observed increase recently, it is small and lower than previously observed increases,” DOH said.
