SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – A flight instructor and a student pilot were injured when a Cessna 172 training aircraft with tail number RP-C6923 crashed in the sea of Barangay Canaoay here on Tuesday morning, May 21.

Ronald Estabillo, area manager of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Region 1 and Cordillera Administrative Region, said the plane, operated by Leading Edge International Aviation Academy Inc., was conducting touch-and-go flights at San Fernando Airport when it crashed.
"Based on the initial information, the San Fernando Tower received an alert from RP-C6923 declaring an emergency failure at 8:23 in the morning after the second touch-and-go at San Fernando Airport at 8:10 in the morning," CAAP said.
The four-seat plane ditched approximately 0.5 nautical miles abeam the threshold of Runway 01 and ended up on the shoreline of Barangay Canaoay.
CAAP said that the engine cowling was missing.
Oil spill booms and crash and fire rescue teams were deployed after the crash.
Estabillio said the victims were given first aid and taken to the Lorma Medical Center here.
CAAP said a follow-up investigation on the incident is ongoing.
