Medical professionals ‘not entirely prohibited’ from selling medical products, says FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday, May 20 clarified that medical professionals selling medical products are "not entirely prohibited," but they need to be licensed by the agency.

“With respect to the medical profession naman, hindi naman natin sinasabing entirely prohibited ang kanilang pagbibenta (With respect to the medical profession, we are not saying that their selling is entirely prohibited),” FDA spokesperson Atty. Pamela Sevilla said in an interview with PTV’s Bagong Pilipinas segment.

Sevilla cited that in 2017, FDA issued guidelines on the purchase of unregistered products from unauthorized clinics or pharmacies.

“This means it is not prohibited to buy from a doctor, but it is necessary that the establishment where they are selling is licensed by the FDA,” she said in a mix of English and Filipino.

“For example, if the establishment has a licensed pharmacist or licensed by FDA, it is not prohibited for them to sell,” she explained.

Moreover, the spokesperson reminded the public to ensure that they are buying from legitimate drug stores.

“Make sure that the doctor, the establishment, and the products are all legitimate and licensed by the FDA. We issue these advisories because we receive many reports from the public about unregistered establishments and illegitimate doctors,” Sevilla said.

“So, with respect to the medical profession, they already know this,” Sevilla added.

In a statement on May 19, FDA cautioned the public against using unsafe drug products from unauthorized sources, such as medical doctors, unlicensed clinics, and other unapproved health facilities.

FDA Director General Samuel Zacate reiterated the warning to the public about accessing drug products from unauthorized sources.

He reminded everyone to follow the regulations set by regulatory agencies.
