Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian is pushing for the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) training and certification of senior high school teachers under the technical-vocational livelihood (TVL) track.
In a statement on Sunday, May 19, the senator says this training and certification is part of an ongoing effort to improve the quality of TVL training and ensure that it’s aligned with TESDA’s standards.
Gatchalian, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, said this will also boost the employability status of graduates under the track.
“Kasabay ng pag-angat natin sa kalidad ng pagsasanay para sa mga senior high school learners, pati na rin sa kanilang kahandaang magtrabaho, isinusulong din natin ang angkop na training at certification para sa mga TVL teachers ng DepEd (Department of Education),” he said.
(Along with improving the quality of training for senior high school learners, as well as their readiness to work, we are also seeking appropriate training and certification for DepEd's TVL teachers.)
“Kaya naman iminungkahi natin ang paglalaan ng pondo para mabigyan ang ating mga senior high school TVL teachers ng kaukulang training mula sa TESDA,” he added.
(That is why we have proposed the allocation of funds to provide our senior high school TVL teachers with appropriate training from TESDA.)
Under the 2024 national budget, the DepEd was allocated P50 million to train and certify senior high school teachers under the TVL track.
Gatchalian is also pushing for free assessment and certification for TVL students, which he says are also provided under the national budget.
The senator is hoping that this certification would increase the chances of would-be graduates getting high quality jobs.
According to him, 50 percent of TVL graduates are employed in elementary occupations such as vendors, cleaners, domestic helpers, car and window washers, and street sweepers.
