Davao routs Rizal; Muntinlupa stuns Bataan for 1st MPBL win

Powered by Arth Dela Cruz, the Tigers pounced on the misfiring Golden Coolers to pull away at 53-23 before cruising to their sixth win against two losses in the round-robin elimination phase of the 29-team tournament.

Dela Cruz chalked 19 points, 14 rebounds and three assists to earn best player honors over teammate James Martinez, who posted 15 points, 14 in the second quarter, and three assists for the Tigers, the 2021 MPBL Lakan Season champion.

They were backed by Terrence Tumalip, Bambam Gamalinda and Jun Manzo, who chipped in eight points each for Coach Manu Inigo.

Rizal, which fell to 5-3, got 18 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists from homegrown John Apacible and 11 points, five rebounds and four steals from Keith Agovida.

Clobbered off the boards, 37-50, the Golden Coolers were further hounded by poor field goal shooting, sinking only 19 of 68 attempts.

Earlier, the Muntinlupa Cagers tripped the Bataan Risers, 69-63, to tally their first win after seven straight defeats.

Joshua Guiab powered Muntinlupa with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals and was supported by Jasper Longalong with 14 points, two rebounds plus two blocks and Dave Moralde with 13 points, three rebounds plus five assists.

Bataan slumped to 3-5 as only Mitchelle Maynes could score in double figures with 11. Top gun Yves Sazon shot 1 of 12 from the field and ended with just three points.

The MPBL returns to the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga, with another triple bill on Monday, May 20. Negros battles Iloilo at 4 p.m., Batangas tackles Quezon City at 6 p.m. and Pasay tangles with Pampanga at 8 p.m.
