DOH cites 8% decline in measles-rubella cases

The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, May 18, reported a decline in Measles-Rubella (MR) cases over the recent three to four weeks (April 14 to April 27).

The health department cited an 8 percent decrease, reporting 408 cases compared to 442 cases two weeks prior (March 31 to April 13).

"All regions did not have a continuous increase of MR cases during the most recent six-week monitoring period," DOH said.

"Note that case counts may change as there may be late consultations and reports," it added.

As of May 11, the 19th morbidity week showed a total of 2,552 MR cases reported since the start of 2024.

The DOH underscored that the nationwide MR epidemic curve is now showing signs of a decrease, which only five deaths have been reported.

Children under 10 years of age have been the most at-risk age group for MR, making up 83 percent (2,114) of the total number of cases.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), through its Ministry of Health (MOH), has been a key partner with the DOH in reducing MR cases.

While BARMM recorded the highest number of cases at 1,196, the outbreak response immunization (ORI) led by the Bangsamoro MOH resulted in a 65 percent decrease in case count in the region when comparing the periods of April 28 to May 11 with April 14 to April 27.

The DOH and the Bangsamoro MOH continue to implement catch-up immunization and ORI in specific Bangsamoro areas where MR cases are still being found.
