Senator Francis 'Tol' Tolentino has announced his strong support for the nuclear power program in Labrador, Pangasinan, as an alternative energy source to help resolve the ongoing power crisis.
During the "Usapang Tol" program on DWIZ, Labrador, Pangasinan Mayor Ernesto Acain mentioned that the groundbreaking ceremony for a windmill facility in their town took place on May 15.
Mayor Acain expressed his gratitude to Tolentino for his assistance with their energy programs.
"You are very well-known as an excellent senator who prioritizes our energy crisis in order to find a permanent solution. Thank you," Acain told Tolentino.
It was revealed that Tolentino helped the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in locating nuclear materials in the waters off Labrador, Pangasinan. These will be instrumental in advancing the nuclear power initiative.
Tolentino emphasized that nuclear power plants are proven to be safe and present a long-term solution to the energy crisis amid the high electricity rates burdening consumers.
"Not only will the residents of Pangasinan benefit from these projects, but the entire country as well," he stated.
Recently, power distribution giant Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced an increase in electricity rates, which for the lawmaker further underscored the need for alternative energy solutions.
Tolentino has filed Senate Bill (SB) No.1194, which provides a comprehensive nuclear regulatory framework and SB No. 2545, or An Act Governing Civil Liabilities and Compensation Claims for Nuclear Damage.
The two Senate bills lay down the foundation for safe nuclear energy development.
