PNP records 30% decline in cybercrime cases from January to May 9

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded a 30 percent decline in cybercrime complaints from January to May 9 this year, the police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) disclosed on Thursday, May 16, comparing the data for the same period in 2023.

Citing its data, PNP-ACG director Brig. Gen. Ronnie Francis Cariaga said they recorded a total of 6,151 cybercrime complaints from January to May 9, or a 29.9 percent drop from 8,775 complaints in the same period last year.

In the same data, he said the three common cybercrime with recorded decline were Online Selling Scam from 1,741 to 1,365; Investment Scam, from 618 to 473; and Phishing Scam, from 591 to 426.

Cariaga said the decrease in cybercrime complaints manifested effective intervention measures in addressing digital threats and cybersecurity measures in both businesses and government agencies.

“It underscores the importance of sustained collaboration, cooperation, and vigilance across all sectors of society to effectively mitigate cyber risks and safeguard the integrity of the digital environment,” said Cariaga.
