Marcos extends P50-M cash aid to El Niño-hit farmers, fisherfolk in Northern Mindanao

President Marcos has lauded the people of Northern Mindanao for their resilience amid the extreme heat brought about by the El Niño phenomenon as he turned over P50 million in financial assistance from the Office of the President (OP) for the farmers and fisherfolk affected by the dry spell.

Marcos said this as he led the distribution of government assistance to farmers and fisher folk affected by El Niño in Iligan City on Thursday, May 16.
In his speech, the President lauded the residents and the local government in Northern Mindanao for their resilience and development in the island's different areas.
"Napakalaki po ang bilib, paghanga, at respeto ko sa inyong lahat kaya naman minarapat ko na isama ang buong lakas ng pamahalaan sa aking pagdalaw sa inyong rehiyon (We deeply admire and respect all of you that's why I opted to bring the entire government during this visit in the region)," he said.
"Pwede ko rin iatas sa iba ang paghahatid ng serbisyo. Ngunit kung gagawin ko iyon... hindi ko matutunghayan ang pag-unlad ng Iligan at Lanao del Norte na bunga ng sipag at tiyaga ng kanyang mga mamamayan (I could have asked someone else to deliver the services. But I would have had missed seeing the progress in Iligan and Lanao del Norte that was the fruit of the people's hardwork)," he added.
The President handed P10.540 million over to Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao; P13.920 million to Lanao del Norte Vice Governor Allan Lim; and P24.360 million to Misamis Occidental Governor Henry Oaminal.
Aside from the financial assistance from the OP, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided P10,000 in cash aid to 9,588 beneficiaries in Iligan City.
Regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and the Department of Health (DOH) also distributed assistance to the residents during the Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair.
Speaker Martin Romualdez, for his part, provided five kilos of rice to each affected resident of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City.
Last week, President Marcos visited farmers and fisherfolk affected by the El Niño phenomenon in Zamboanga City, General Santos City, and Sultan Kudarat where he likewise led the distribution of presidential assistance worth P10,000 to each beneficiary.
