De La Salle players Angel Canino, Julia Coronel and Thea Gagate are all looking forward to joining forces with veteran setter Jia Morado following their Philippine women’s volleyball team call-up.

The Lady Spikers are excited to make their debuts for the national team in the upcoming week-long AVC Challenge Cup which boasts an interesting mix of other collegiate and pro players.
Following their disappointing UAAP Season 86 campaign that saw them fall short of defending the title, the trio is now focused on gaining precious experiences and making the most of the opportunity.
“‘Yung national team is a big opportunity for us para makita ‘yung ano pa talaga ang kulang namin individually and talagang pwedeng gawin sa sarili namin. Siyempre itong opportunity na ito is to present kung sino talaga kami. We’re also given the opportunity to represent our country, so we’re very proud of it,” Canino said.
The Season 85 Rookie of the Year-Most Valuable Player had to miss five games for La Sale in the second round eliminations due to a right arm injury she sustained on a freak accident.
Still bothered by her injury, the 20-year-old outside hitter was grateful for the chance to prove herself beyond the collegiate competition.
Aside from Morado, though, Canino is also happy to have UAAP rivals super rookie Casiey Dongallo, two-time MVP Bella Belen and two-time Best Opposite Spiker Alyssa Solomon in the same side of the court.
“I’m looking forward na maging setter si Ate Jia. Kasi before nakikita ko lang siyang nagse-set. Mayroon talaga siyang connection to each and everyone sa loob ng court. ‘Yun ‘yung pinaka-excited ako. Makikita mo ‘yung maturity niya inside, makikita mo ‘yung leadership niya kaya gusto ko rin siyang makasama,” said Canino.
“Nilo-look forward ko rin is having Casiey Dongallo, Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon in the team. Kasi siyempre magkalaban kami sa UAAP. So I really look forward na makalaro sila sa national team na iisa lang ‘yung goal namin,” she added.
La Salle captain playmaker Coronel is probably the most thrilled among the trio as she will be taking turns with Morado as the only two setters in the 16-woman lineup.
Meanwhile, Morado is coming off a successful maiden stint in Japan's Women V Cup where she helped the Denso Airybees win the title.
“It’s been a dream of mine ever since. Kaya grabe rin ‘yung saya ko nung narinig ko na I get to be part of this pool or lineup. For me, gusto ko talagang paghirapan to and get as much experience as I can,” Coronel said.
“‘Yun din talaga ‘yung big goal ko for myself and for the rest of us na we get the opportunity, experience para ma-improve pa namin ‘yung mga sarili namin like what Angel said na we get to know kung saan pa ba kami nagkukulang at ano pa ba ang pwede naming i-improve. Very exciting to get to compete internationally against international teams. Something I am looking forward to and I’m really excited to play for the flag,” she said.
