Darren Espanto guesses the ending of 'Can't Buy Me Love' and wishes he had made a bet

One week after the final episode of the Kapamilya series "Can't Buy Me Love" aired, viewers are still talking about it, particularly the crucial scene where Bettina Tiu (played by Kaila Estrada) admitted to killing Divine (Shaina Magdayao), the mother of Caroline "Ling" Tiu-Mariano (portrayed by Belle Mariano).

Actor-singer Darren Espanto - who played Caroline's childhood friend Stephen Tanhueco in the series - admitted that he was one of those "invested" in guessing "Who Killed Divine?" The identity of the "killer" was teased by producers of the show and kept viewers excited before the airing of the penultimate episode entitled "You'll Be Unsafe Here." . (Note: the hit TV series is still being shown on Netflix.)

"Si Bettina na yung hula ko like a month before the finale. Opo talaga, kasi parang walang nang bibintang kay Bettina eh," Darren said during a media conference announcing his "D10" 10th year anniversary concert at SMART Araneta Coliseum on June 1.

"Si Bettina kasi, bata pa lang siya, may certain hatred na siya eh. Towards Divine's family and also kay Ling.Tapos, growing up, walang nagsa-side sa kanya. She was never heard. At tsaka wala siyang backstory. Alam mo yun, yung parang lahat sila (characters), naipakita nila yung backstory nila eh. Si Bettina, wala talaga. So bakit? Mapapatanong ka bakit wala?," Darren asked.

Darren correctly guessed the show's villain due to his penchant for watching crime stories and documentaries.

"Kakanood ko ito ng mga serial killer, mga documentary sa Netflix eh. Ito ang nagawa sa akin ng pandemic. Yung pagbi-binge watch ng mga true-to-life scene of the crime, mga ganun," the popular Gen Z artist quipped.

Darren pointed out that not even cast members like him were privy to the truth in the plot as they were also kept guessing by the directors and crew, aside from the fact that they signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

"Wala. We're not allowed to talk to each other kapag kukunan na yung mga scenes for the finale. Walang ibang artista  na pwede sa set kundi yung kukunan. Glam team, anyone but the production and the director. Yun lang talaga yung pwede," he revealed.

"So wala po kaming idea talaga. Tapos, since they all shot alternative endings, lahat sila took turns na sinasaksak si Divine. Lahat kami hindi namin alam kasi nung last day na, parang...oo... sinasaksak ko si Divine, pero hindi ko alam kung ako yung pumatay, ganun," he added.

Darren regretted that he could not place a bet with his friends.

"Dapat pala nag-bet ako eh. Kung sino yung killer. Nanalo sana ako!," he joked.

Darren thanked his fellow CBML members, such as Chie Filomeno, and the popular SnoRene love team of Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings, for supporting his coming concert. He also expressed hope that Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano, if they are not out of the country, can attend the show.
