LTO chief warns dealers: Release license plates in 11 days

Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II on Tuesday, May 14, warned car dealers that they could have their dealerships closed if they fail to release license plates within 11 days from a car’s purchase.
 

This came after he also announced that the LTO has enough driver’s license cards and motor vehicle license plates to last until the end of the year, and that all four-wheel motor vehicles and up on the road today should have their license plates by July 1.
 

“Opo, puwede ho natin pasarado iyong dealer na iyon (Yes, we can have that dealer closed), regardless of who dealer that is,” he said when asked about the violations that dealers face if they fail to release the license plates on time. 
 

“Kung talagang ayaw niyang sumunod at patuloy ang violation on the timeline sa pag-deliver ng plates ay papasarado na po natin iyan (If they don’t want to follow and they continue to have violation on the timeline of delivering the plates, we will have them close down),” he added.
 

Mendoza stressed that the same rule will be applied on LTO employees who fail to do their jobs of releasing the license plates within five days from the time that the papers are filed at the LTO for registration.
 

“Doon sa mga tao naman sa LTO the same thing, ite-terminate ho natin iyan. That’s why sa meeting namin ng mga regional directors kahapon ay talagang ipinagdiin ho natin iyong timeline ‘no (Regarding our people in the LTO, it’s the same thing, we will terminate them. That’s why in the meeting with the regional directors yesterday, we emphasized the timeline),” he explained.
 

The official held a sectoral meeting with President Marcos, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Bautista, and DOTr Undersecretary Andy Ortega on the status of driver’s license cards and motor vehicles license plates.
 

The July 1 deadline is currently being implemented with the LTO chief noting that law enforcers have been asked to flag down motor vehicles without license plates or are using temporary license plates.
 

A show-cause order to some 100 dealerships has already been sent already, and they will be given until next week to respond.
 

“Today lang natin ito pinadala ‘no (We just sent them today), what we did is of our proactive approach, hindi natin hinihintay na mag-complain ang tao sa atin (we did not wait for people to complain), we asked our law enforcers to…iyong mga walang plaka, pinara nila, kinunan ng picture iyong sales invoice at iyon ang pinadalhan natin ng show cause order today (those without plates, they flagged down, they took pictures of the sales invoice and we sent them show cause order today),” Mendoza added.
 

Owners of new motor vehicles are given a sales invoice by their dealers to show proof to traffic and law enforcers that their vehicles are new and license plates have not been released yet.
 

But the LTO, after securing enough supplies for the production of the license plates, has set the deadline to July 1.
 

“Iyan (That’s it), by July 1, there should be no temporary plate anymore, but July 1, kailangan lahat ng (all) four-wheel motor vehicles and above should have their plates already,” Mendoza stated.
 

However, the LTO chief said he would have to discuss with higher authorities first if the agency will implement a ‘No Plate, No Travel’ policy on July 1.
 

“Pag-isipan natin, ika-klaro ko muna sa boss ko (We will think about it first, I will clarify with my boss first),” he said.
