CEBU CITY – With Vice Mayor Raymond Garcia ascending as acting mayor following the six-month suspension of Mayor Michael Rama, a prominent figure in the city council is set to occupy the second-high government post here.

Councilor Dondon Hontiveros expressed readiness to assume as vice mayor in an acting capacity for the next six months.
Hontiveros earned the right to temporarily replace Garcia being the councilor who got the most votes in the last elections.
Hontiveros said he has yet to receive an order from the Department of the Interior and Local Government to assume his new role.
He said being a vice mayor is something not new to him.
Hontiveros served as vice mayor for seven months before the 2022 elections. The ascension from a city councilor to vice mayor came after then Vice Mayor Rama became mayor following the death of Edgardo Labella.
“At times, I served as acting Vice Mayor and there was even a time when I was the acting mayor so I have an idea as to the responsibilities,” said Hontiveros.
One of the challenges that Hontiveros faced as an acting vice mayor was when the city was battered by typhoon “Odette” in December 2022.
Hontiveros said he had to call for a special session for the immediate release of financial assistance.
As a presiding officer of the city council, Hontiveros sees no problem working with the executive department.
“If there are some things that the executive, which is headed now by my Don Bosco High School classmate, acting Mayor Raymond Garcia, needs that requires approval from the legislative, I will immediately relay it to my fellow members in the council. We just need to help each other,” Hontiveros said.
