May 16 is the red letter day when a newly renovated SM City Caloocan is launched. For the local Caloocan movie-going community, the Cinemas going fully operational on May 17 comes just in time for the slew of May Hollywood blockbusters that will cater to families, to action fans, and barkada nights.

Three regular SM cinemas are slated to open on May 17, and they’re part of the grand plan of SM Supermalls to upgrade and enhance the viewing experience of the SM mallgoer. In the past, and as seen in other malls, this upgrade could have been done piecemeal, one cinema at a time. This would result in one cinema being better, one with a newer screen, better sound, nicer seats, and so on. With SM Cinemas, the directive has been to make the openings uniform, such that the three cinemas at Caloocan will all boast of the latest and brightest, and any moviegoer can appreciate this attention to standards and detail.

And look what’s coming in May alone! When the cinemas open, families can troop to watch IF (Imaginary Friends). This is a live-action/animated fantasy comedy written and directed by John Krasinski (husband of Emily Blunt), and it stars Ryan Reynolds as Cal and Cailey Fleming as Bea, the young girl who sees IFs (imaginary friends). When Bea discovers that Cal also sees them, they go on a mission to reunite the abandoned IFs with their former kids. Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridges, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Awkwafina, and Louis Gossett, Jr. are just some of the voices of the IFs.

On May 22, action fantasy fans are in for a treat when Furiosa, a Mad Max Saga, hits cinemas. A post-apocalyptic road adventure directed by George Miller, the fifth Mad Max installment serves as a spin-off and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa, and Chris Hemsworth acts against type (and having fun) as the Warlord Dementus, one of the two main tyrants in the film. This film will have its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and then open globally, and SM Cinemas will be one of the places to catch the movie.

May 29 is family entertainment time as the new The Garfield Movie opens, with Chris Pratt voicing Garfield and Samuel L. Jackson as Vic, Garfield’s long lost father, a scruffy street cat. Present for the new misadventures is Odie (Harvey Guillen), the dim-witted beagle and Garfield’s best friend. And showing up as villainess is Jinx, a Persian cat (voiced by Hannah Waddingham). Look out for Snoop Dogg, who voices a Maine Coon with an eyepatch. Expect this to be a lot of fun, and with a lot of lasagna!

Speaking of lasagna, Snack Time at the SM City Caloocan offers a new, much-improved version. They now provide Combo Meals that combine Popcorn, soda, and a sandwich—a cheeseburger, chicken burger, or hot dog. For those in a retro mood, Corn Dogs are served at Snack Time.

Utilizing a Retro Industrial design, the three SM City Caloocan cinemas boast Standard Laser Cinema projection, a Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound System, and Standard Cinema Glider Seats. Each cinema has 88 seats with two PWD slots for 270 seats. Every stone has been turned in to enhance the movie experience of the Caloocan mallgoer.
