Mayor Honey inspects Roxas Boulevard for implementation of 'Car-less Sundays'

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan inspected the Roxas Boulevard on Sunday morning, March 12, for the impending implementation of Ordinance No. 9047 or “Move Manila Car-Free Sundays By The Bay.”
Under the ordinance, all types of motorized vehicles will be banned on north and southbound lanes of Roxas Boulevard to give way to Manileños who want to engage in physical activities or exercise by walking, jogging, running, roller skating or biking.
Lacuna-Pangan said she will sign the ordinance on May 13.
The stretch of Roxas Boulevard from Padre Burgos Circle to Quirino Avenue will be closed to traffic from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. every Sunday, starting May 26.
"The program is designated to advance the city’s goal of becoming a livable city where healthy lifestyles and environmental preservation are ingrained habits,” said Mayor Lacuna-Pangan who is also a doctor.
She assured that the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) will issue traffic advisories about Move Manila program and guides on the locations of water stations, parking areas and first aid stations.
“Our car-free Sundays will be different from others like it because our venue is Roxas Boulevard, the most beautiful and historic boulevard in the country. We inspected Roxas Boulevard to ensure that the road will be safe for all,” the mayor said.
During the onsite inspection, Lacuna-Pangan was accompanied by Manila Vice Mayor John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto, Manila Police District (MPD) Director Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, City Engineer Armand Andres, MTPB Head Dennis Viaje, City Electrician Randy Sadac, Department of Public Services Head Nicole Amurao, Manila Spokesperson Princess Abante, Chief of Staff Joshue Santiago ,Manila Sports Council (MASCO) chief Roel de Guzman and Councilor Philip Lacuna, who authored the ordinance.
According to the Manila City Council (MCC), the ordinance was supposed to be implemented on May 5 but was delayed due to preparations.
Councilor Lacuna said his ordinance is meant to promote health and wellness, and introduce a pollution-free fitness program in the city.
He assured that the re-routing of traffic flow on the affected areas will be carefully planned and managed by the appropriate agencies, to ensure the public of continued timely travel and efficient delivery of goods and services without delay.
"Medical emergency first responders and hydration stations shall be deployed at strategic locations along Roxas Boulevard for the well-being of program participants and the general public gathered participating in the activities while necessary waste management measures shall be implemented before and after each event to ensure a waste-free and healthy environment for the conduct of the program activities," Councilor Lacuna said.
Light motor vehicles, he added, may be diverted to the parallel service roads along Roxas Boulevard and other side streets, while heavy motor vehicles may be rerouted to nearby main thoroughfares such as Taft Avenue.
The councilor explained that the local government of Manila recognizes the importance of physical activities to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among its constituents, while in harmony with the natural and man-made environment in the city.
