2 laborers buried alive in Batangas


SAN JUAN, Batangas – Two laborers died after they were buried alive while working in a construction site in a private residential and beach resort community on Saturday, May 11, in Barangay Laiya Ibabao here.

Police identified the victims as Mark and Anthony.

Investigation said Apollo Saligao, a site manager of Porto Laiya residential and beach resort, heard the victims shouting for help after they were buried by silky white sand which eroded while they were digging for the foundation of metal support posts.

The victims were rescued one after the other, Mark at 9 a.m. and Anthony at 11 a.m.  

They were taken to the San Juan District Hospital by Joel Decatoria, a safety officer, where they were declared dead by Dr. Emerson Lim.

Police are probing the incident and the contractor and the victims’ families have entered into an amicable settlement.
