3,000 individuals receive AICS financial aid in Negros Occidental

BACOLOD CITY – A total of 3,000 individuals in Negros Occidental received P9-million worth of financial assistance under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Sen. Imee Marcos led the distribution of the AICS in La Carlota City where beneficiaries from fourth and fifth districts of the province gathered on Friday, May 10.

She was assisted by Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson and Vice Gov. Jeffrey Ferrer, who both thanked her for coming to the province to personally lead the payout.

A total of 1,638 recipients were from the fourth district, composed of 500 from La Carlota City, 200 in Bago City, 236 each in the towns of Valladolid, San Enrique, and Pontevedra, and 230 in Pulupandan town.

There were 1,362 beneficiaries in the fifth district – 200 in Himamaylan City, 236 each in the towns of Moises Padilla and Isabela, and 230 each in the towns of Hinigaran, La Castellana, and Binalbagan.

Marcos said that beneficiaries were tricycle drivers, farmers, fisherfolk, and market vendors. They each received P3,000 in cash aid, she added.

She said that these sectors have been greatly affected especially during the pandemic and the ongoing El Niño phenomenon.

Everything is expensive. Vendors could not pass it on. Rice is expensive and with the oil price hike, tricycle drivers are affected, she added.

In a press conference after the event, Marcos said that as immediate assistance to farmers and fisherfolk affected by the dry spell, the Department of Agriculture will extend P5,000 to each badly affected rice farmers and P3,000 each for displaced fisherfolk.

“Negros is a very large agricultural area,” Marcos said.

She urged local executives to help DA with the listing of affected farmers and fisherfolk to update their status.

Prior to the AICS distribution, Marcos, with celebrity Ella Cruz, led the awarding of the winners of the basketball clinic and cheer dance competition in La Carlota City.

She had a closed-door meeting with mayors in the province after the press conference.
