Calling a spade a spade, Isabela 6th district Rep. Faustino “Inno” Dy V says the "prayer rallies" being headlined by former president Rodrigo Duterte are nothing but a hatchet job against the Marcos administration.
“The fact that they are calling it a peace rally is a bit ironic. It’s not all about peace," Dy, a House deputy majority leader, said in a recent interview.
What are these prayer-slash-peace rallies about then? "Puro paninira ang nangyayari, puro pambabastos pa, puro paninira sa ating current administration but they're not even offering any other solutions to what they're saying or the problems,” he said.
(It's all about maligning people, disrespecting people, and assailing the current administration.)
Dy expressed bewilderment at the persistence of such events, even as President Marcos continued to espouse his message of unity and cooperation toward progress.
“Nakakalungkot na ganito ‘yung sitwasyon nila ano, na patuloy pa rin hanggang ngayon na sinusubukan nilang siraan ang ating Pangulo pero hindi naman po matitibag basta-basta ang popularidad, ang support ng ating mga kababayan sa ating mahal na Pangulo,” Dy said.
(It's saddening that they're stuck in this situation, that they're still trying up to now to malign our President. But our President's popularity, and the support he gets from our countrymen, won't be easily overcome.)
Marcos won the May 2022 presidential race to the tune of 31 million votes.
It was during one of these so-called prayer rallies that Duterte accused his successor, Marcos, of drug use. He also criticized the administration's efforts to amend the 1987 Constitution, and claimed that the aim was to extend the term of sitting government officials.
At a prayer rally in Manila, former Biliran congressman Glenn Chong threatened to slap First Lady Liza Marcos-Araneta. This drew strong condemnation from House members and the public.
During another prayer rally in Tagum City, former House Speaker, Davao del Norte 1st district Pantaleon Alvarez made an alleged seditious remark and told the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to withdraw support from the President over his handling of the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue.
Alvarez, a close ally of Duterte, is now facing an ethics complaint in the House of Representatives in relation to the controversial statement, and other violations.
