46°C heat index recorded in Virac, Catanduanes on May 10

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the intense heat reached a "dangerous" level in 22 areas on Friday, May 10.

PAGASA reported that Virac, Catanduanes recorded the highest heat index of the day at 46 degrees Celsius (°C), followed by Roxas City, Capiz at 45°C.

The heat index reached 44°C in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Aparri, Cagayan; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; Dumangas, Iloilo; and Catarman, Northern Samar.

A heat index of 43°C was logged in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Station, Pasay City; Iba, Zambales; Sangley Point, Cavite; Ambulong, Tanauan, Batangas; Daet, Camarines Norte; Tacloban City, Leyte; and Davao City, Davao del Sur.

Meanwhile, it reached 42°C in Cubi Pt., Subic Bay, Olongapo City; Cuyo, Palawan; Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Pili, Camarines Sur; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Catbalogan, Samar; and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur.

PAGASA warned that heat indices between 42 degrees Celsius (°C) and 51°C indicate “danger,” as "heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely," and "heat stroke is probable with continued activity."

The heat index measures how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with the actual air temperature.

On April 28, Iba, Zambales recorded the highest heat index so far this year at 53°C.

PAGASA said a heat index above 52°C indicates “extreme danger” as “heat stroke is imminent.”
