World Champion: UP Law wins 2024 Jessup Moot Court Competition

The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law was hailed as the world champion at the 2024 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

In an announcement on April 8, UP said the competition, held in Washington, DC on April 6, is an “advocacy” competition among law students from which the teams have to present oral and written appeals to convey the current issues of public international law “in the context of a hypothetical legal dispute between nations,” according to the International Law Students Association’s website.

Composing the UP Law Jessup Team were Mary Regine Dadole, Pauline De Leon, Pauline Samantha Sagayo, Chinzen Viernes, and Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal, coached by UP Law Senior Lecturer Marianne Crielle G. Vitug and Associate Professor Rommel J. Casis.

UP also said Villareal was honored with the Schwebel Award for being the “Best Oralist.”

“The entire UP community joins in celebrating this historic triumph, which not only underscores UP Law’s legacy of excellence but also inspires future generations of legal scholars and practitioners worldwide,” UP Law said.

The university said that the UP Law Jessup Team defeated 642 groups from over 100 nations.
