Filipinos urged to honor the sacrifices of heroes

As the nation observes the 82nd anniversary of the Day of Valor (Araw ng Kagitingan) on Tuesday, April 9, a Catholic Church leader urged the public to always remember the sacrifices and sufferings of the country’s heroes.

In a message, Diocese of Antipolo Bishop Ruperto C. Santos said Filipinos must remember the country’s heroes with gratitude for the freedom and independence that we have today.

“To celebrate this Day of Valor is to recall the sacrifices and sufferings of our heroes who offered their lives for our freedom. They thought first of all the sovereignty of country, its liberation from invading enemies. They fought for rights and dignity. Let us remember them with gratitude and appreciation for what they have done for us. What we enjoy now-freedom and independence-are because of them,” said Bishop Santos.

The prelate called on the public to always advocate for peace and to work for the common good.

“Let us resolve to denounce wars and conflicts which will result only to destruction and death. Let us work hard to foster and promote peace so that all would live in harmony, order, and in equality. Let us set aside selfishness, sins and vices that would enslave us and ruin our lives. Let us free ourselves from anything that will lead us to disgrace, and violate our rights and dignity,” said Bishop Santos.

“Lastly let us pray and work together for the good of our country, for our success and for God’s glory,” he added.

The theme for the 82nd anniversary of the Araw ng Kagitingan is “Pagpaparangal sa Kagitingan ng mga Beterano: Saligan para sa Nagkakaisang Filipino,” to highlight the heroism of Filipino veterans.

The observance is in remembrance of the Bataan Death March, the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of about 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war from Bagac and Mariveles in Bataan to Camp O’Donnell in San Fernando, Pampanga.

The total distance was 65 miles (105 km.) and killed about 17,000 due to hunger, exhaustion and physical abuse.
