At this point, the Lady Tamaraws already have one foot on the doorstep of the semifinals after improving their record to 6-4 in the standings, good enough to solidify their hold of the solo fourth spot.
Last week, top seed University of Santo Tomas followed by last season’s finalists De La Salle and National University booked the early return tickets to the semifinal with convincing victories against separate foes.
Interestingly, no team outside of the top three sides has defeated FEU in the eliminations.
Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons are now one loss away from officially being eliminated from the Final Four race, while the hapless University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons side are out of contention.
Rookie Faida Bakanke and veteran Chen Tagaod delivered 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead FEU’s fourth win in five matches.
Gerzel Petallo and Jean Asis had 11 and 10 markers, respectively, in the balanced attack.
FEU nearly squandered a 10-4 advantage in the second set but hung tough for a two-set lead.
Locked at 11-all in the third set, the Lady Tams couldn’t completely get the Lady Falcons off their backs as they engaged in a nip-and-tuck affair.
In the end, Bakanke fired back-to-back hits to bring FEU at match point, 24-21, but Adamson saved two as it continued to hope for an extension.
Before the win could slip away, FEU head coach Manolo Refugia was successful after calling for a floor touch challenge which sealed the deal for his side.
“Sa kinalalagyan namin ngayon parang mas gigil pa kami na makakit ‘yung goal namin na makapasok sa Final Four. And also our goal na mabawian ‘yung mga nakatalo sa amin nu’ng first round,” said Refugia.
On the other hand, Red Bascon paced the Lady Falcons with 13 points, while Barbie Jamili added 11 markers all on kills.
