Perhaps the ultimate test in separating truly all-time greats from just simply good fighters is how one bounces back from adversity.

That’s exactly what Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao expects from his son Jhanlo Mark “The Machine” Sangiao.
The second-generation fighter’s bubble burst last year when he was submitted by Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu in the first-ever loss of his competitive career.
For Sangiao, now’s the time for his son to show what he’s made off, and he expects nothing less from “The Machine” moving forward.
“Jhanlo is in really good spirits right now. Sure he was very upset after absorbing his first-ever loss last year, but he assured me that it won’t affect him as a fighter,” he said.
“I know emotionally it hurt him. It was his first loss, and I know he felt down after that loss. But he needed that to keep growing,” he added.
“I told him that if your goal is to be able to get the belt in the future, you need to be consistent to consistently improve.”
Sangiao also excitedly talked about two other guys in his stable – the unbeaten Carlo Bumina-ang and the equally impressive Carlos Alvarez.
The two burst onto the scene last year in the weekly ONE Friday Fights spectacle where Bumina-ang currently holds an immaculate 4-0 record and Alvarez totes an impressive 3-1 slate.
Sangiao is making sure that the two remain on their toes even after an impressive debut year in 2023, as he expects them to compete soon and hopefully get that main roster contract.
“As for Carlo and Carlos, they’re not deviating from their daily training. We know that the promotion could offer them matches anytime, so they have to be equipped anytime,” he said.
“Maybe tomorrow or the next [day]. There really is no reason for us to take a break.”
