A kitten was hit to death by a man in Barangay Olympia, Makati City on Sunday, April 7, officials of the barangay said.

In a viral video uploaded in social media, an old man was caught by his neighbors hitting the kitten in front of his house after he was allegedly clawed by it.

“Akala ko po kung ano ‘yung inaano niya sa damuhan. Yun pala po ‘yung pusa nakita ko nag-iiyak. Bigla po akong napatakbo, pinagpapalo na po pala niya (I thought he was just hitting something behind the grass. I was surprised when I saw that it was a kitten crying)," one of the witnesses and uploader of the video Zielfa Jesura said in an interview, adding that the man took a trash bin to dispose the body of the kitten.

She sought help from the barangay, which resulted in the suspect's arrest.

In his defense, the old man said he was shooing the cats from his house. However, one of the kittens was left at his porch.

Upon getting closer to the kitten, it allegedly tried to claw him in the eyes, prompting him to kill it with a wooden stick.

“Gusto ko lang talagang paalisin. Hindi ko talaga gustong patayin ‘yung hayop na ‘yun. Kaya lang, wala akong magagawa. Biglang parang kinalmot. Muntik na kong tamaan sa mata e. Kaya nag-blackout na ako (I just wanted it to go away. I didn't mean to kill that animal. However, I was forced to kill it after it tried to claw me, nearly hitting my eyes)," the suspect explained.

Barangay Olympia Desk Officer Jocelyn Fernandez said that killing animals is prohibited by the law and urged the public to just turn over stray animals to the barangay.

The suspect is currently detained at the police station for documentation.
