Rama implements modified class hours due to extreme heat in Cebu City
CEBU CITY – Mayor Michael Rama here has issued an executive order adjusting class hours instead of suspending classes due to extreme heat.

MAYOR Michael Rama has issued an executive order directing public schools in Cebu City to implement modified school hours due to extreme heat.
Mayor Michael Rama’s EO directed all public elementary, high school, colleges, universities, and graduate schools to “adopt and strictly implement modified school hours” to protect students and educators from the extreme weather conditions.
Under Rama’s EO, classes must start at 6 a.m. and end not later than 12 noon. Afternoon and evening classes must start at 4 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.
“No physical or face-to-face classes shall be conducted within the period between 12 noon (and) 4 p.m.,” the mayor’s EO stated.
Rama gave private institutions the discretion to adopt the modified school hours.
“The observance and strict implementation of the modified school hours shall be automatically lifted once the heat index and temperature will stabilize within the normal range and safe limits as may be officially determined and publicly declared by PAGASA,” the EO added.
Rama said the implementation of the modified school hours was decided after a multisectoral meeting that was attended by officials of the Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education.
While this city is adopting modified school hours, the province of Cebu has suspended in-person classes in public schools due to high heat index.
The suspension of classes in Cebu province “until further notice” was based on a memorandum issued by Gov. Gwen Garcia.
