MECO distributes relief packs, cash assistance to hundreds of Pinoys affected by Taiwan quake
Relief packs and cash assistance have been distributed to hundreds of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were affected by the 7.2 magnitude quake that hit Taiwan, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) announced on Sunday, April 7.
The assistance package was distributed to OFWs during the visit of MECO chairman Silvestre H. Bello III in Hualien, the epicenter of the tremor.
The visit was part of the efforts to monitor the extent of impact of the tremor to the OFWs.
Bello also met with county officials and thanked them for also looking after the safety and welfare of Filipinos in the area along with the Taiwanese whose living condition was also disrupted by the earthquake.
“We are here to extend the sympathy of our President to the government and people of Hualien. We are also here to check the condition of our kababayans,” he said.
MECO distributed T$150,000 in assistance for emergency use of the various OFW organizations.
Bello likewise visited the OFWs who sustained injuries in their dormitories, and another one in the hospital who fell unconscious at the height of the tremor. He handed T$10,000 each in cash assistance.
Hualien, the biggest county and a major tourist destination in Taiwan, is host to about 1,400 OFWs.
Earlier on Friday, Bello met with about 30 leaders of Filipino community groups from various parts of Taiwan who reported the situation of their members in the aftermath of the earthquake.
