Phivolcs: No tsunami warning after 6.7-magnitude quake hits Mariana Islands

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it had not detected a tsunami threat to the country after a strong earthquake that struck Mariana Islands on Friday evening, April 5.
Phivolcs said the 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck at 7:03 p.m.
“No action [is] required,” it said as there is “no destructive tsunami threat.”
Phivolcs said a tsunami is a series of sea waves that are commonly generated by undersea earthquakes and can reach heights of more than 5 meters.
It added that tsunamis are erroneously referred to as tidal waves and are sometimes confused with storm surges.
