NCR road repairs for another long weekend OK'd, but MMDA says only DPWH given a go
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has given a go-signal for the road reblocking and repairs in at least 14 areas in Metro Manila in a bid to take advantage of another long weekend.
But MMDA chairman Don Artes said only the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be allowed to undertake road repairs after two private contractors of a telecom company failed to comply with the agreement to finish their works on time during the long Holy Week break.
“Our decision to allow only the DPWH to undertake road reblocking and repairs was because of what happened when the two private contractors failed to finish their job on time,” said Artes in a press briefing.
“We will only allow DPWH to conduct 24-hour road repairs which they commit to finish on time and implement properly in the same manner as they implemented it during last Holy Week’s road repairs,” he added.
Artes said the DPWH road works will start on Friday, April 5 until either April 10 or 11, depending if April 10 will be declared as holiday due to Ramadan.

The Kamuning Flyover
Meanwhile, Artes assured the public that necessary traffic management will be implemented as soon as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) commences with its retrofitting of EDSA Kamuning Flyover Southbound.
In the briefing, representatives of the DPWH said the retrofitting of EDSA Kamuning Flyover Southbound is necessary in order to ensure its structural integrity.
They cited the recent case of the earthquake in Taiwan wherein roads and other infrastructure projects were damaged as a result of the 7.2 magnitude tremor.
The Kamuning Flyover retrofitting, they said, is also aimed at preparing for a strong quake that may hit Metro Manila, adding that the focus is to ensure the safety of all motorists and other road users.
Artes, for his part, emphasized that the retrofitting of the Kamuning Flyover is necessary to avoid further damage and be structurally sound and ready in case of disasters such as earthquakes.
“The re-decking of the flyover cannot be deferred. We assure the public that we will manage the traffic in such a way that the impact of the repair is minimal to the motorists,” said Artes.
He said that the Mabuhay Lanes will be utilized as alternate routes amid the repairs of the flyover which is set to start on April 25 and will last for 11 months.
“We will coordinate with the Quezon City local government unit, DPWH, Quezon City Police District, Highway Patrol Group, and the barangay to manage the traffic. We will divert the traffic so that motorists could avoid the certain portion that will be subject to re-decking,” said Artes.
The MMDA chairman also said they will intensify clearing operations in areas within the vicinity.
“This is to make sure that roads serving as alternate routes are clear and obstruction-free to minimize the effects of the repairs in traffic,” said Artes.
