US, France, UK, EU back Philippines after China's latest water cannon attack

Several diplomats on Tuesday, April 30, assured the Philippines of their support after yet another harassment incident initiated by naval assets of China in the West Philippine Sea.

United States Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson said Manila “can count” on Washington’s support as a friend, partner and ally in upholding the freedom of navigation and international law.

Her assurance came as she called out China’s latest actions, which involved conducting dangerous maneuvers and a water cannon attack to disrupt a lawful Philippine mission in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Other diplomats who supported the Philippines’ support were from France, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

France’s embassy in Manila said Paris is concerned following China’s recent action.

“France renews its call for respect of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and of freedom of navigation,” ir said.

“We oppose any threat or use of force contrary to international law and recall the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue. We also recall the decision rendered by the Arbitral Court on July 12, 2016,” it added as it noted the damaging of the Philippine vessels due to China’s action.

UK Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils said UK is condemning China's latest action and has reiterated their "call for respect for UNCLOS and adherence to the 2016 Arbitral Award, which is legally binding on the parties."

EU Ambassador Luc Veron, meanwhile, said that dangerous maneuvers, water cannoning, floating of barrier or any aggressive behavior are "a threat to safety of life at sea, the freedom of navigation, and the prohibition of the use of force or coercion."

"In short, this is against international law," he asserted.
