DepEd streamlines public school teachers' workload, ancillary tasks for more teaching time

To ensure that public school teachers can devote more time to classroom teaching, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced the issuance of a policy that rationalizes public school teachers’ workload and defines ancillary tasks and assignments that can be given to them.

Vice President and Secretary of DepEd, Sara Z. Duterte, signed DepEd Order No. 05, s. 2024 as a "follow-up" to an earlier issuance that removed administrative tasks from teachers.

The policy, outlined in the DepEd Order, aims to streamline teachers' workload, with six (6) hours allocated to actual classroom teaching and two (2) hours for ancillary tasks, which may be completed within or outside school premises.

These ancillary tasks include Curriculum Planning, Curriculum Delivery and Pedagogy, Assessment of Learner’s Progress, and Homeroom Guidance and Management.

Tasks not falling under these categories will be delegated to the administrative personnel of the schools.

Additionally, the DepEd Order provides guidelines and procedures for determining appropriate teaching loads and payment for teaching overload.

Payment for teaching overload will be made every quarter, subject to the extent of allotment for this purpose.

In cases of insufficiency of funds, teaching overload hours shall be converted to earned Vacation Service Credits (VSC) as provided under the agency’s existing policy.
