2024 Paris Olympics ceremonial kick-off event

The Ambassador of the French Embassy in the Philippines, H.E. Marie Fontanel, together with the Ambassador of the Embassy of Greece in the Philippines, H.E. Ioannis Pediotis, conducted a symbolic turnover of the Olympic torch, followed by a flame-lighting
ceremony and a symbolic relay event, marking the 100-day countdown to the Games.

The event, held in front of the globe at the SM Mall of Asia in Manila on April 16, 2024, coincided with the day when the Paris 2024 Olympic Flame was lit in the sanctuary of
Olympia, Greece, where the ancient Games were held.

The upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games are scheduled from July 26 to Aug. 11, 2024, followed by the Paralympics from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8, 2024.

After the ceremonies, the two ambassadors and guests headed to S Maison Main Atrium for the inauguration of the photo exhibition, "Legacy in Motion: A Visual Tribute to Olympic and Paralympic Athletes," a poignant tribute to the athletes and sports that have defined the Olympic movement. The exhibit celebrates the spirit of athleticism, perseverance, and camaraderie that transcends borders and generations. More than just a showcase of athletic prowess, it is a powerful tribute to the human spirit, a story of dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering determination.

Among those featured are the country’s first Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, along with Filipino athletes Margielyn Didal, Eumir Marcial, Carlos Yulo, and Nesthy Petecio,
who participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Also included is Michael Christian Martinez, who began his ice-skating career at SM Skating to become a two-time Winter Olympian.

The photo exhibit was presented by Agence France-Presse, the Alliance Française de Manille, the Embassy of France to the Philippines, and SM Supermalls. It is a visual journey through the history, triumphs, and legacy of the Olympics and Paralympics. The exhibit will be on display at The Podium from May 20 to 26 and at SM Aura from June 23 to 30, 2024.
