Zamboanga City classes suspended from April 4 to 5 due to extreme heat

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Task Force El Niño led by Mayor John Dalipe has cancelled classes on Thursday and Friday, April 4 and 5, due to extreme heat in this city.

Dalipe announced the suspension of classes in his social media page which said: “There will be no on-site classes in all levels in both public and private schools from April 4-5 due to extreme heat conditions.”

His decision was the result of Resolution No. JD 01-2024 approved by Task Force El Niño on Tuesday, April 2. It asked he mayor to issue an executive order to suspend on-site classes on all levels and implement a flexible work schedule in government offices and agencies for all members of vulnerable groups.

The resolution was passed based on a recommendation by City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer Elmeir Apolinario to the mayor to issue an executive order focusing on the potential suspension of classes and flexible work arrangements when the heat index reaches a high 40 degrees Celsius and above.

The recommendation also encouraged schools to implement blended and hybrid learning for all levels and flexible working arrangements for offices.

The resolution was viewed favorably during a meeting on Wednesday among representatives from the Department of Education, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, and City Health Office, offices tasked to make its recommendation to Dalipe.

Dalipe decided to suspend classes immediately after receiving reports of heat-related conditions suffered by students on different levels. PAGASA forecast heat indices on April 4 and 5 to be 40 to 41 degrees Celsius in Zamboanga City.

An executive order will follow as a basis for the suspension of classes and implementation of flexible working arrangements to be concurred by the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
