Duterte issued the reminder as the 2024 DAVRAA meet officially kicked off at the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao Sports Complex in Barangay Mintal here.
She urged coaches and officials to take a break and suspend games if the heat becomes unbearable to ensure everyone’s welfare.
“May I remind everyone, especially coaches and officials, if the weather is scorching and the Sun is extremely high, just stop the game. You can choose to play either early in the morning or late in the afternoon towards the evening for your well-being,” she said.
She reminded athletes from the 11 divisions to take a break, especially if they are not feeling well.
Duterte welcomed athletes, coaches, and officials to the event.
“The DAVRAA is a yearly event. I am honored to stand before you all, surrounded by the spirit of competition and camaraderie that fills this arena. To all athletes, coaches, parents, teachers, and valued guests, welcome to the city, and congratulations for making it this far,” Duterte said.
She thanked the Department of Education (DepEd), Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the local government units (LGUs) for their efforts in the DAVRAA.
Duterte recalled that Davao City hosted the DAVRAA twice when she was mayor because they were preparing for and bidding to host the Palarong Pambansa (National Games).
“My warm gratitude to the organizers and partners who have poured their energy and dedication into making this event possible. Your hard work is deeply appreciated. We are all gathered today, eager to see the excitement of sports unfold,” she said.
Duterte said the regional meet is a platform of growth and an opportunity for transformation.
She added that in the next few days, athletes will discover the true meaning of competitiveness, not just against others but also against their limitations and doubts. “It is also a chance for others.”
Vice Mayor J. Melchor Quitain Jr. here echoed the Vice President in his opening speech.
He urged DAVRAA technical officials to always ensure the athletes’ safety and welcomed them in behalf of Mayor Sebastian Duterte and the Davao City government.
Also in attendance during the opening were Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat, Davao de Oro Rep. Maricar Zamora, and representatives from Mapua Malayan Colleges Mindanao, New City Commercial Corp. (NCCC), and Santos Land Development Corp.
This year’s DAVRAA with the theme “One Theme, One Dream: Shaping Filipino Sports Champion” is participated in by 7,835 student-athletes from Davao City, Digos City, Island Garden City of Samal, Panabo City, Tagum City, Mati City, and the five provinces of the Davao region.
The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) deployed over 1,000 personnel to secure this city and delegates of the DAVRAA that has 29 competitive sports events in 24 venues from April 1 to 7.
