Tunay na Math-alino: Pinoy math wizards on a roll in international math contests

Several young Filipino math proteges continue to rack up awards and recognitions in international mathematics competitions as they prepare for future events that will display their mathematical brilliance.

Trained by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Philippines (MTG) headed by Dr. Simon Chua, the wizards have wrapped up the Covid-19 pandemic years by winning a total of 5,488 medals which include 1,007 golds, 1,655 silver, and 2,826 bronze medals plus 1,422 merit awards in various virtual international mathematics contests.

"Our mathletes have high hopes of continuing their winning streak abroad and again make the country and their respective schools and families proud," Chua said.
    
MTG is "confident these kids could show their high competence in math first in the coming Global Math Competition in Vietnam next June," he added.
     
Several upcoming competitions the math wizards will participate in include the Po Leung Kuk Primary Math Contest and the World Math Olympiad, both in Hong Kong; International Math Competition-Singapore (IMC-S); Asia International Math Olympiad in South Korea; International Math Wizards Challenge in Indonesia and the International Math Open for Young Achievers.
    
Earlier, MTG kids stood tall and got their Asian counterparts' attention by topping math powerhouses China and Taiwan and emerging as overall champion during the 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2018 editions of IMC-S.

This gave MTG officials confidence that their trainees would "continue to blaze along and elevate themselves to powerhouse status."
    
In March this year, some 500 students attended a four-day intensive in-house training program in Tagaytay City which aimed to rekindle their passion and drive for math. The students had earlier undergone MTG's Math Challenge Training Program which consists of 12 Saturday sessions on special math topics and the latest problem solving strategies, among others.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) cited the organization for "helping the agency fulfill its mandate in providing quality basic education to learners."

During the awarding ceremony on Feb. 20, DepEd Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte presented the non-government organization (NGO) with a plaque of appreciation in recognition of its dedicated partnership with the office, and its unwavering commitment, exceptional collaboration, and invaluable contributions to the Matatag Agenda for Basic Education Development Plan.
