The Lady Bulldogs became the first squad to inch closer to a Final Four return after coming off a massive upset victory over top seed University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses before the Holy Week break.
It was NU’s third straight victory, hiking its win-loss tally to 8-2. UE, for its part, sank deeper into the bottom standings with a 2-7 card that put its semis hopes in peril.
Veteran spikers Alyssa Solomon and Bella Belen took turns to help NU and went on to finish with 14 and 13 points, respectively, with the latter scoring four kill blocks in the process that went with 10 digs and 10 receptions.
The Lady Bulldogs fired 47 attacks to overpower the Lady Warriors, who only managed 26 kills. NU also posted 10 blocks including four from Belen, as well as six aces, while UE laid a big fat egg on the said two departments.
NU was also successful in limiting league-leading top scorer Casiey Dongallo to a career-low six points -- a far cry from her consistent double-digit outputs including a 30-point production in the first round and a 23-point average in eight games.
Before the break, UE was coming off a four-set bounce back victory against Adamson last March 23, which snapped its six game slide.
No other Lady Warriors reached the double digit mark as they were completely silenced in the offensive and defensive end, with no player scoring a single block or service ace in the brief affair.
In men’s play, the NU Bulldogs also swept the UE Warriors, 25-13, 25-17, 25-22, to improve to 8-2.
Jade Disquitado and Leo Aringo stepped up in the clutch for the Bulldogs and delivered 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Season 85 2nd Best Outside Spiker Michaelo Buddin also made his season debut after recovering from a fractured right hand, making 3-of-7 attacks and six excellent receptions as a second and third set substitute.
Steven Aligayon scored 12 points in a losing effort for the Red Warriors, who slid to 1-8.
