Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo has called on Philippine authorities to closely monitor the situation in Taiwan after the southeastern coast of the country was struck by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake.
Salo specifically directed his call to the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taiwan, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) so they may provide assistance to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and coordinate with concerned agencies to facilitate aid and support recovery efforts.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected, and we stand in solidarity with the people of Taiwan as they rebuild and recover. Let us pray and offer our support with the Taiwanese people during this challenging time,” Salo said in a statement Wednesday, April 3.
The veteran congressman works closely with OFWs in his capacity as chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs.
Salo further said that DMW and OWWA need to immediately establish a mechanism to inform families of affected OFWs of their loved ones’ status following the strong earthquake.
