A total of nine hectares of grassland were destroyed – seven in Barangay Banago and two in the boundary of this city and Talisay City, Negros Occidental.
Firefighters spent at least two hours each in putting out the two grass fires.
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez responded to the fire in Barangay Banago near the northbound terminal after receiving a call for help from the Missionaries of Charity Home of Joy.
Benitez said that residents and patients of the facility were safe and secured as firefighters were able to control the fire.
At least 12 fire engines responded to the fire.
Benitez thanked those who helped in putting out the fire.
No injuries were reported.
On Monday night, the BFP enforced controlled burning as one of their strategies to prevent huge grass fire incidents amid the El Niño phenomenon.
The city government held a coordination meeting with various department heads, local agencies, and offices to address the evolving El Niño conditions at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) on Wednesday, April 3.
Jeff Patrick Maquiling, a weather observer from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), provided insights into weather patterns expected in the coming months.
“Bacolod City is fortifying its resilience against the challenges posed by El Niño,” Benitez said.
To ensure every household here has access to water, Benitez pledged to mobilize 10 tankers. “Access to water is a basic right, and I will work tirelessly to ensure it is fulfilled for all our residents,” he said.
Benitez urged all residents to stay informed, remain vigilant, and actively participate in preparedness initiatives to ensure the safety and well-being of this city.
