Classes in Metro Cebu suspended due to extreme heat


CEBU CITY – Several local government units in Metro Cebu have suspended face-to-face classes due to extreme heat.

Talisay City Mayor Samsam Gullas suspended classes on all levels in public schools until April 14. Private schools were given the discretion to suspend in-person classes.

Classes on all levels in public schools in Minglanilla town were suspended starting April 3 “until further notice.”

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan cancelled classes on all levels in public schools from April 3 to 12. Chan let private schools decide whether or not to suspend face-to-face classes.

Classes on all levels in public schools in Naga City were suspended from April 3 to 14. Liloan suspended classes on all levels in public schools from April 3 to 12.

Cebu City Councilor Rey Gealon filed a resolution calling for the suspension of classes to protect students from extreme heat as authorities have warned that temperatures over 33 degrees Celsius may lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

While classes here are yet to be suspended, upland barangays have been placed under a state of calamity after they were severely affected by extreme heat.

Lack of water supply and agricultural damage have been noted in mountain barangays here.
