Classes in 4 towns in Southern Leyte canceled due to extreme heat


TACLOBAN CITY – At least 12 schools in the municipalities of Malitbog, Macrohon, Pintuyan, and Tomas Oppus in Southern Leyte suspended face-to-face classes on Wednesday, April 3, due to extreme heat.

The local government of Biliran in Biliran province issued an executive order shifting classes to blended learning until April 19 because of extreme heat.

Face-to-face classes were allowed in the morning session and shifts to modular distance learning in the afternoon.

Leyte province is simmering due to extreme heat.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration in Tacloban said that the heat index as of 1 p.m. is 39 degrees Celsius.

The State weather bureau said two areas in Eastern Visayas may reach dangerous heat index on Wednesday – Guiuan, Eastern Samar, and Catarman, Northern Samar – from 42 degrees to 51 degrees Celsius.

Continued exposure to searing heat may lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
